With summer in full swing, your little ones are likely spending a lot of time outside in the sun. As much as the extra exercise and vitamin D are beneficial, the harmful effects of UVA and UVB rays are not. As leaders in pediatric skin treatments in Chester, SC, Mante Pediatrics offers the following guide to parents concerned about protecting their little ones at the pool or the park.

The Harms of Sun Exposure

Excessive sun exposure carries immediate as well as long-term effects. Aside from the pain and discomfort a sunburn brings, each one also elevates your child’s risk of developing skin cancer later in life. Protection against the sun also prevents skin discoloration and loss of elasticity. Regular use of sunscreen is essential to curb these effects.

Not All Sunscreens Are Created Equal

Not just any sunscreen is suitable, especially for young children who have more sensitive skin. Use a broad-spectrum formula that protects against both types of UV rays, with an SPF of 30 or higher. If your child is engaging in sports or water activities, choose a water-resistant product and reapply at least once every 80 minutes. Also, if your child has undergone skin treatment for allergic reactions in the past, use sensitive skin formulas.

Sunscreen Best Practices

For children under 6 months old, it’s best to keep them out of the sun or cover their skin completely. From 6 months on, make a habit of applying sunscreen on all exposed skin any time you prepare to leave the house. Wait at least 15 minutes before going outside to allow the product to take effect. Also, remember that sun exposure is still a concern on overcast days, because cloud cover does not block harmful UV rays.
